Wittenberg Professor Shows Photographs on Campus

Wittenberg Assistant Professor of Art Janice Glowski is the curatorial organizer for an exhibit of photography titled India’s Coffee Country: The Domestic and The Divine by Andrew LaMoreaux on display in the Springfield Center for the Arts at Wittenberg University Gallery until Dec. 31.

The exhibit gives viewers an international experience, containing photographs taken during the artist’s time overseas “navigating the back roads of India’s coffee country and spending time in the homes of estate owners and families in the Karnataka region of South India.”

LaMoreaux, a documentary photographer with an international focus and faculty member in the Art Department at Marietta College, wants the exhibit to take the viewer to a world “beyond exotic India.” During his time abroad, he spent time discovering India’s Coffee Estate region, where he explored the “essence of family bonds, spiritual commitment, economic aspirations and the lives built off the land.”

LaMoreaux received his BFA from The Ohio State University and his MA in Documentary Photography, which is the equivalent of an MFA, from the University of Sydney in Australia.

Wittenberg students are allowed free admission, as well as parents, alumni, faculty, staff and members of the Springfield Museum of Art. For everyone else, the cost of admission  is $5 for adults, and children under 17 are admitted free. Sundays are also free admission days.

The Springfield Center for the Arts at Wittenberg University is located at 107 Cliff Park Road. Ohio Northern Holds Luncheon and We have Nominees!

Ohio Northern Art Fights Hunger

The Ohio Northern University Department of Art and Design will hold its fourth annual Artists against Hunger luncheon in the Wilson Art Gallery on Saturday, Nov. 16, at 11 a.m.

The Artists Against Hunger luncheon offers the community an opportunity to give back in exchange for a lunch and a handcrafted ceramic bowl made by students from Ohio Northern University and Hardin County schools. The bowls will be filled with one of a variety of soups, including minestrone, chicken noodle, butternut squash and chili.

Each bowl will be $10, and all proceeds will go to the Hardin County Backpack Program. In addition to lunch and the choice of a one-of-a-kind bowl, the community will be encouraged to participate in a weeklong food drive, during which non-perishable food items can be donated at various locations on ONU’s campus.

We have received 16 nominees for this years competition! We are excited to see what work they upload for this years program. Wittenberg Professor Raises Money to Fight Domestic Violence

Assistant Professor of Art Daniel McInnis is bringing his work home with him. After teaching at Wittenberg for six years, McInnis’ artwork graces the walls of the Ann Miller Gallery in Koch Hall, the place where he teaches, inspires and gives students the tools to express themselves creatively and professionally.

Battleground, a compilation of photographs taken using McInnis’ iPhone, “documents glimpses of an American state in transition, a landscape mixed with both troubling anxiety and healthy pride.” The exhibit, which was introduced with a lecture by McInnis on Monday, Nov. 11, is open to the public free of charge from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays through Saturday, Dec. 6.

McInnis said Instagram and iPhone photography have become acceptable forms of art.

“Most artists and publishers agree that it has less to do with how expensive your camera is, and more about what you do with the tools you have,” said McInnis, who is the director of the Ann Miller Gallery. “While Ohio might not sport the boisterous architecture of Chicago or New York and isn’t endowed with the more dramatic geology of the American West, there are things to see here. These are images of the in-between places in what has come to be known as a political battleground state. Sometimes, according to what media outlet to which you are referring, the battleground.”

The artwork was produced from a very relatable and accessible source that all college students can connect with, but it doesn’t stop there. With Battleground, McInnis reiterates what Wittenberg is all about:  giving back to the community.

Each image in the gallery is available for sale, ranging in price from $20 to $60. All proceeds from sales of artwork in the Battleground gallery will be donated to Project Woman, a Springfield organization created to aid victims of domestic violence and sexual assault.

McInnis has taught photographic practice and history at the School of Visual Arts in New York, John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York, The American University in Dubai, and Ithaca College. His work has been published by Saint Lucy, Dodho Magazine as a Featured Photographer, and Battleground, a self-published monograph by Apple Books. McInnis was a 2012 Competition Winner for Photo Review and a finalist in the PhotoPlace Open 2012 Catalog by Blurb Books.

EVAs 2014!!

So far we have received almost 15 nominations from students all over Ohio in our institutions. The nominations are open until the 18 of November so keep sending them in! 

Nominations and Internship!

We continue to receive nominations from our institutions for senior art students to participate in our 2014 Award for Excellence in the Visual Arts. If you are studying art at an AICUO school be sure to talk to your Art Department Chair about being nominated before November 12! 

Also, it's starting to be that time of year when we start looking for our next intern! This is a paid internship that will give you lots of great experience in the art community, event planning, and communication skills. For more information look at the internship portion of this blog!
