UNIVERSITY OF DAYTON'S MARIAN LIBRARY DIPS INTO COLLECTION FOR SERIES OF ART EXHIBITS THROUGH 2016

DAYTON, Ohio — Treasures from the University of Dayton's Marian Library will be on display throughout 2016 as the library reaches into its vast collection for five exhibits, including the religious works of one of the most important representatives of German Expressionism.

"The gallery schedule for 2016 is somewhat of a show and tell," said the Rev. Johann Roten, S.M., director of director of research, art and special projects. "The Marian Library's collection of art runs so deep that we will spend a full year displaying some of our most inspiring pieces."

Recognized as the world's largest and most comprehensive collection of printed materials on Mary, the library includes more than 100,000 books and printed materials in more than 50 languages, holy cards, music, paintings, sculptures and statues, prints and more than 3,000 Nativity scenes from around the world.

The first exhibit will focus on epinals, popular religious images printed around 1850 to teach religion and make the saints better known to common people. The images were often used to decorate homes and helped people pray with texts printed in the margins in French, German or Spanish.

More than 30 of the intricate color prints will be on display to launch the library's year-long series, which will feature a variety of art forms and themes including vibrantly colorful paintings, calligraphy, online art and conclude with Nativity scenes from Mexico and Latin America. All exhibits are free and open to the public.

Feb. 8 to March 31 — "Epinal: Popular Art for Mind and Heart." Print art of the 19th century.

April 11 to May 31 — "The Fairest of All: Rediscovering Mary." Paintings by Jan Oliver-Schultz.

June 13 to July 23 — "The Life of Mary in Image and Word." Various artists and art forms interpret scenes from Mary's life.
